At Speakeasy Tattoo in Los Angeles California I am learning all I can about tattooing and its culture. This week I decided to examine celebrity tattoo culture. Lots of times celebrities influence what kind of tattoos are popular or sought after. As they tend to set trends and create styles that influence others to copy them, it is important to remember that trends fade and it is always important to get a tattoo that is specific to you, not a celebrity. With that said, let's take a look at some celebrities and their tattoos.

Oscar winner Emma Stone has a black bird tattoo to match with her mother. “Emma Stone and her mom got matching tattoos as a reference to The Beatles song "Blackbird," and to commemorate Krista overcoming breast cancer. The drawing was actually done by Paul McCartney himself after Stone met him while filming Zombieland. "Custom tattoos by Paul McCartney. Isn't that wild? Unbelievable," she told David Letterman in 2010,” (Oprahdaily). Emma Stone’s tattoo looks like two little footprints that a blackbird would make if it had landed on her inner wrist.

Another celebrity we will look at is Adele who also has tattoos that symbolize a tribute to her family “Adele has three tattoos, all of which are tributes to her 6-year-old son, Angelo, with husband Simon Konecki. She's got an "A" behind her ear, his name along her right pinky, and the word "Paradise" along her left pinky. In a 2015 interview with The New York Times, the Grammy-Award winning singer explained she got all of them because Angelo is her "paradise," (Oprahdaily).

Lady Gaga has several tattoos but only on the left side of her body. “At this point, it's unclear how many tattoos Lady Gaga has, but they all have a special meaning. One of them is the word "dad" inside a heart, which Gaga got as a tribute to her father, Joe Germanotta, after he had to get emergency surgery. She also has a rule that her tattoos only go on the left side of her body, thanks to a request from Germanotta. "He asked that I remain, on one side, slightly normal. So I only have tattoos on my left side. I think he sees this as my Marilyn Monroe side, and he sees this as my Iggy Pop side," Gaga told Rolling Stone in 2011,” (Oprahdaily).

On the more out there side, we have the honorable mentions of Post Malone’s “Always Tired” under his eyes, T-Pain’s facebook like, Lil Wayne’s “Fear God” eyelid tattoo, and Mike Tyson’s tribal face tattoo, (Complex). All iconic in their own ways for better or worse depending on your taste.

Regardless of what the celebrities do, it is always important to get a tattoo that is important to you. When you let go of trends, you remain genuine and therefore are already pursuing a life of harmony.
